RENAISSANCE MMA: RMMA 3 RESULTS
By Percy Crawford| October 16, 2007
Renaissance MMA held it's 3rd installment of RMMA at the Castine Center in
Mandeville, Louisiana this past Saturday. The card featured seven action-packed amateur fights and one
professional fight that pitted two highly touted camps against one another as The Armory's Rafael Chavez took
on American Top Teams Chris Zuniga. All of the fights ended early with none going to the judge's
scorecards.
Kevin Burns defeated Kevin Roberts by 2nd round TKO
(strikes) Both fighters came out winging hard shots, but Burns
proved to be too tough and strong for Roberts. Once the fight went into the clinch, Burns used a nice Judo throw to
get Roberts to the mat and started raining down shots. The 2nd round saw much of the same until the ref jumped in
and halted the action.
Michael Montelone defeated Michael Melito by 2nd round verbal
submission
Montelone landed a hard right hand to start off the action which led to
Melito taking the fight to the ground where he landed some shots. Montelone reversed positions and avoided some
triangle attempts by picking Melito up and slamming him down. In the 2nd round, the fight went to the ground
immediately and ended with Montelone landing shots from a full mount. Melito complained to the ref about not being
able to see and verbally submitted.
David Castro defeated Gus Becnel by 3rd round TKO
(strikes)
The first 2 rounds were action-packed with a lot of ground work and
maneuvering for position. Castro seemed to be the stronger of the two and finished off the fight with some ground
and pound that forced a referee stoppage late into the round.
Jodi Cazenave defeated David Pogue by 2nd round submission (rear naked
choke)
The fight went to the ground immediately with several submission attempts and
reversals. The fighters were in awkward positions on a few occasions. The second round was another Jiu Jitsu battle
until Pogue gave up his back. Cazenave landed some punches and hammer fists until he was able to sink in his hooks
and flatten Pogue out and sink in the rear naked choke which forced Pogue to tap out. Cazenave was given the
"Fighter of the Night" sword!
Byron Byrd defeated Kenny Cavelier by 1st round TKO
(strikes)
This fight was a mismatch from the beginning. Byrd was all over Cavelier from
the opening bell. He set a frantic pace that ended with him pounding on a covered up Cavelier until the referee
halted the action in the opening stanza.
R.J. Goodridge defeated Ryan Gautier by 1st round submission (triangle
choke)
Gautier was able to execute a nice slam on Goodridge, but fell right into
Goodridge's guard. In the process of raining down punches, Gautier allowed Goodridge to secure a triangle choke in
which he landed several shots to the top of Gautier's head forcing a tap.
Jason Galjour defeated Henry Gomez by 1st round submission (rear naked
choke)
Another apparent mismatch where the skill set of Galjour was far superior to
Gomez from the opening bell. Gomez fought hard, but was totally outclassed. He surrendered to a rear naked choke
midway through round number 1.
Rafael Chavez of (The Armory) defeated Chris Zuniga of (American Top Team)
by 1st round TKO (strikes) in the lone pro bout of the night Chavez ran across the cage and delivered the perfect flying knee which knocked Zuniga
onto his back and probably should've ended the fight. Chavez landed a few right hands for good measure until the
ref halted the action 47 seconds into the bout.
